Do you know about safety of drug Macrodantin? I have been prescribed this drug for a UTI and I am really scared about all the possible and likely side effects of it. I am in good health otherwise and am taking no other medication. Does anyone have any experience with it. I have taken one days worth so far and there have been no effects. Would it have happened by now? Thank you.

rott replied: "Consult a pharmacist and your Dr. Remember to ask about meds when doctors prescribe them. Also most pharmacies offer printouts with med info on them. hope that helps."

donna m replied: "This drug is one which commonly helps relieve your symptoms. It is not wise to stop an antibiotic without your doctor's knowledge. You could contact the pharmacist who filled the pre ion for more information. The drug may take a couple of days to start its work. Unless you think you are allergic to it.(rash, breathing difficulty) talk to doctor or pharmacist BEFORE you discontinue taking it. Stopping an antibiotic prematurely can actually cause you to become sicker by setting up the body for what is known as a "superinfection." Donna"

Meredith O replied: "I took this. I believe it worked well to get rid of the UTI, BUT you WILL more than likely have stomach pains and runny stools.. (the big D..not pleasant.) But in all seriousness, it has to be taken. The UTI NEEDS to be treated, if not.. that leads to horrible things. It will affect birth control, so use a backup method. It may make you feel crappy, but stick with it."

should a paraplegic with chronic urinary tract infections take Macrodantin on a chronic basis? after 32 years of paralysis I am having more frequent UTIs. there are few specialists who take Medicare, and I am not near an SCI center.

LINDA R replied: "Some doctors recommend that people who have chronic UTIs or have any medical condition that puts them at risk for chronic UTIs should take an antibiotic on a regular basis. I am at risk, so I take Macrodantin daily, and have not had an infection in several years. I understand you are having difficulty finding a doctor, but in order to get antibiotics, you will need to see a doctor. Call your insurance company for suggestions."

Is Macrodantin 50 mg daily safe for my 4 year old to take? She went to see a nephrologist and she is scheduled to have a Nuclear VCUG and he wants her to take Macrodantin 50 mg at night for 3 weeks until the test is done. I don't know anything about this drug...Info that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I am really worried about the side effects of this drug...

micksmixxx replied: "Take your pick from the articles on the following page. (Obviously, some of them ... the ones for professionals and advanced ... are heavier reading than others.) From my quick reading of the topic, it seems a fairly safe drug to use for someone as young as your child ... so long as they're not allergic to any of the active constituents of the drug. I wish both yourself and your daughter the very best of luck, and I do hope that nothing serious is found."

Can dogs take Macrodantin? Can dogs take this antibiotic and if they can what is it used for and what is the dose for dogs?

Spel Chekker replied: "ALWAYS check with your vet before giving unprescribed medication to your pet. Many meds that are tolerated by the human body can be extremely toxic to dogs or cats."

L. S. replied: "if your dog has an infection, it would be prudent to see a vet and administer antibiotics which have been prescribed for that purpose. never give any medication to your pet without your vet's advice!"

Diane D replied: "Find out by calling a vet."

badgirl41 replied: "macrodantin is used for bladder and urinary tract infections in people, do not give 2 your dog. amoxicillan or penicillan can be used on dogs but u need 2 go 2 the vet 2 get antibiotics if ur dog needs them."

rita_alabama replied: "It's never a good idea to give people antibiotics to dogs. The wrong dose or drug can KILL them. Even if the antibiotic is given to dogs (and I don't think it is) the formulation and strength may be radically different. See your vet if you think your dog needs antibiotics."

I am 3 months pregnant & was diagnosed with UTI, I was prescribed w/ MACRODANTIN. Is this safe? Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals is the generic name of Macrodantin

rorybellows replied: "if you are seeing an OB GYN and he knows you are pregnant, why would he give you something that isnt safe?"

Pamela replied: "As long as the doctor knew you were pregnant when he wrote the pre ion, it will be safe. He's not allowed to prescribe anything harmful to your baby:)"

jossa replied: "I had 3 UTI's when I was pregnant because my baby rode low the entire time constantly putting pressure on my bladder. That was the only medication I took during my entire pregnancy (I didn't even take Tylenol) and my daughter is just fine. As long as they know you are pregnant, there is nothing to worry about. If you do not take something it can lead to a kidney infection which is far more dangerous I was told."

ashley96008807 replied: "Why should Macrodantin not be prescribed? If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to nitrofurantoin or other drugs of this type, such as Furoxone, you should not take Macrodantin. Make sure that your doctor is aware of any drug reactions that you have experienced. Unless you are directed to do so by your doctor, do not take Macrodantin if you have poor kidneys, producing little or no urine. Nitrofurantoin should not be taken at term of pregnancy or during labor and delivery; it should not be given to infants under 1 month of age. it is right in this articale if u go to it and read what it is why its supposed to be taken the dose etc.... it does say should not be taken if pregnant!!!!!! talk to ur doc if u want to take a more natural approach i found this web. about what to take while pregnant.... - articles/448.html go ahead and read on there it says canberries can be used"

Macrodantin while pregnant? I am 16 weeks pregnant and was told today at urgent care that i have a UTI and kidney infection, so they prescribed macrodantin. The doctor assured me that its safe for a pregnant woman to take. The pharmacist said that its not something they normally prescribe for pregnant woman because they haventdone many studies on it. Im scared to take it, i called the OB and he said its OK to take, he was so rude and not even caring about my concerns which made me also feel unsafe about it. Has anyone taken macrodantin while pregnant and had problems or not had any problems? anyone heard anything about it? thanks so much =]

mystic_eye_cda replied: "Well studies in animals have shown it is safe, but there aren't any well controlled-studies in pregnant women. However there are very, very rarely studies done on pregnant women. On the other hand I would insist on one of the older antibiotics like amoxicillin. I don't have a drug plan so generally that is what I am prescribed, one time I had a UTI and the doc had samples of some new antibiotic specifically for UTIs (macrobid?) and it took longer to work, and I don't think it cleared the infection completely. Older drugs have a much bigger record of safety. Generic Name Nitrofurantoin Trade Name Macrodantin Manufacturer Risk Category B * Controlled studies done on animals in reproduction do not indicate risk to the fetus. * No adequate and well-controlled studies done on pregnant women. FDA Pregnancy Risk Categories Place (not click) your mouse cursor over the bold words in the text below to receive de ion Indication * Urinary germicide. Fetal Risk * Not teratogenic in animals. * No adequate human data, no fetal adverse effects have been reported but if used near term it may cause hemolysis in newborn."

Finchy replied: "Your doctor would know more about that medication that a pharmacist - they get updates on what medications are considered safe daily where as a pharmacist only gets an update when they look into new studies being done. Once a pharmacist leaves school they are not required to keep up to date on current studies."

Jen F replied: "Macrodantin is the same drug as Macrobid, only in a different dose. I have an ongoing kidney problem and have to take an antibiotic daily. I was on Macrodantin for several weeks. It's a category B drug and perfectly fine. I wouldn't suggest taking Amoxicillen as it can lead to bacterial resistance...meaning it can create a "super bug" that doesn't respond to antibiotics. Definitely start the antibiotics ASAP as infection can lead to contractions. Make sure you take all of it, exactly as prescribed too. UTI's are not something to mess around with during pregnancy."

Lea replied: "It appears to be okay for pregnant women not at term. In general, drug studies are not pregnant women. Studies are conducted using animals and anecdotal reporting by women who took it while pregnant. If your UTI has spread to your kidneys, you really need to take this medication before it spreads to your blood. Some of the common UTI drugs are tetragenic, and so, are not given. Pharmacists are required to take a certain number of continuing education courses to keep their licenses. The number varies by state. In general, it is doctors who loose contact with drugs which are not in their speciality. I am certain your OB is very knowledgeable about the safety profile of drugs in pregnant and nursing women. However, if he/she was asked about medications in the geriatric population, the doctor will probably have problems answering it."

jenny b replied: "Angie if both docs say it is ok then take it but also ask the docs if you can take another antibiotic."

Can I drink alcohol with macrodantin? not huge quantities, just a couple of glasses

tay y replied: "NO!"

TitoBob replied: "My research (I Googled "alcohol and antibiotics") indicates that it is safe to have one or two drinks while taking an antibiotic. You should have received a brochure along with your macrodantin which would tell you if it isn't safe. You can also phone a pharmacist and ask the same question."

Fresh Lemonade replied: "Macrodantin is given for certain purposes only & accordingly I'd avoid alcohol entirely until it's completed & all the while on it replace much of your fluid intake with water...this is best for your health."

Matthew M replied: "As I general rule, I would say that you shouldn't drink alcohol while taking any type of medicine. But if you feel that you must have an alcoholic beverage, I would say keep it small and don't have more than one."

Macrodantin and UTI's.? I began getting monthly UTI's starting last July; a week or so ago I was put on Macrodantin. I did not have a UTI at the time Macrodantin was prescribed, and had previously been treated with Bactrum. But as of about halfway through today I started getting the usual symptoms of a UTI - urgency, frequency, pain, ect. Are these side effects of Macrodantin? Is it possible to contract a UTI while on Macrodantin?

sacredtaboo replied: "Yes. you can still get a UTI. I would get a second opinion from a known urologist to make sure your diagnosis is correct. their are several ways to help avoid getting a UTI, and several more ways to treat them."

J B replied: "It is possible to get a UTI while on an antibiotic - it means that the antibiotic isn't working against the "germ" that is causing the infection and you need a different antibiotic. You need to talk with your doctor about your symptoms. In the meantime, dramatically increase your water intake to help decrease your symptoms or take some Azo or Uristat along with your antibiotics. If you have been having UTI's monthly, something is wrong. Hopefully, you have made an appointment with a urologist to find out why this keeps happening."
